സന്ധ്യയുടെ തോളില് മയങ്ങാന് കൊച്ചി വെമ്പല് കൊള്ളുന്നു. പട്ടിന്റെ പാലാഴിയില്, ശീമാട്ടിയില്, കാത്തിരിപ്പിന്റെ നിമിഷങ്ങള് മാഗസിന് പേജുകളിലൂടെ മറിഞ്ഞു. താഴത്തെ നിലകളില്, പട്ടിന്റെ ഖനിയില് ഇഷ്ടങ്ങള് തിരയുന്ന കസ്റ്റമേഴ്സിന്റെ തിരക്ക്. അതിന്റെ അലയൊലികള് അഞ്ചാം നിലയിലേക്ക് എത്തുന്നതേയില്ല. ഇത് ശീമാട്ടിയുടെ ഓഫീസ് ഫ്ളോര്. വാതില് തുറന്നടയുന്ന ശബ്ദം... കേരളത്തിലെ പട്ടിന്റെ ബ്രാന്ഡ് അംബാസിഡര് നടന്നു വരുന്നു. ബീനാ കണ്ണന്, ശീമാട്ടിയുടെ സാരഥി.

വരവിന്റെ ഉദ്ദേശ്യം ഞാന് പറഞ്ഞു. ബിസിനസ് വിശേഷങ്ങളൊന്നും വേണ്ട. ലൈഫ് സ്റ്റൈല്, ഇഷ്ടങ്ങള്, യാത്ര....ഇതൊക്കെ മതി. ഇതിനിടെ സഹായിയെത്തി വിശാലമായ വിന്ഡോ കര്ട്ടനുകള് തുറന്നിട്ടു. എം.ജി.റോഡിന്റെ ആകാശ കാഴ്ച.
ഏസി ഓണ് ചെയ്തു. അന്തരീക്ഷത്തില് നേര്ത്ത സുഗന്ധം. ഷനേലിന്റെ എന് 5 പെര്ഫ്യൂമാണ് ബീന ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. സ്വന്തം കടയില് നിന്നാണ് പെര്ഫ്യൂം എടുക്കുന്നത്. ഷനേല്, എസ്കാഡ എന്നിവയാണ് ഇഷ്ട ബ്രാന്ഡുകള്. മൈല്ഡ്, ഫ്രൂട്ടി ഫ്ളേവറുകളാണ് പ്രിയം.

ചിരിക്കുന്നു.മൊബൈല് വീണ്ടും സംഗീതം പൊഴിച്ചു. വാത്സല്യവും സൗഹൃദവും നിറച്ച് ചെറിയ ശാസനകള്. അങ്ങേത്തലയ്ക്കല് ഫോണ് വയ്ക്കാന് ഭാവമില്ല. നിര്ബന്ധിച്ച് ബീന ഫോണ് കട്ട് ചെയ്യുന്നു. മകളാണ്, തുഷാര. എംബിഎ പ്രവേശനത്തിനായി കാറ്റ് പരീക്ഷയ്ക്ക് തയ്യാറെടുത്തുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.
അപ്പോഴാണ് കയ്യില് കിടക്കുന്ന വാച്ച് ശ്രദ്ധയില് പെട്ടത്. കാല്വിന് ക്ലെന്നി (കെഎന്)ന്റെ വാച്ചാണ്. ഈയിടെ റഷ്യയില് പോയപ്പോള് വാങ്ങിയത്. കാല്വിന് ക്ലെന്, പോലീസ് എന്നിവയാണ് വാച്ചുകളില് പ്രിയം.
സ്വര്ണത്തോട് ബീനാ കണ്ണന് വലിയ കമ്പമില്ല. ചെവിയില് ഇമിറ്റേഷന് ഓര്ണമെന്റാണ്. വലത്തേ കൈയിലെ മോതിരവിരലില്, ഡയമണ്ട് കല്ലുകള് പതിച്ച സഫയര് മോതിരം.
വസ്ത്രങ്ങള്
സ്ത്രീ സുന്ദരിയും സെക്സിയുമാകുന്നത് സാരിയിലാണ്. ഒഫിഷ്യല് കാര്യങ്ങള്ക്ക് പലതും ഇവര് സാരിയാണ് തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാറ്. തമിഴ്നാട്ടില് പോകുമ്പോഴും സാരിയാണ് വേഷം.
ഇഷ്ടങ്ങള് മാറിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കും. ബോംബെയിലേയും ഡല്ഹിയിലേയുമൊക്കെ ട്രെന്ഡ് നമ്മള് സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നത് ഒരുപാട് നാള് കഴിഞ്ഞാണ്. പക്ഷേ, ഇത് ആദ്യം എത്തിക്കുന്ന കാര്യത്തില് ബീനാ കണ്ണന് നിര്ബന്ധമുണ്ട്. അവര് ധരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന മസാകലി ടോപ്പും ലെഗ്ഗിങ്സും തന്നെ മികച്ച ഉദാഹരണം.
പാര്ട്ടികളിലും കുടുംബത്തിലെ ചടങ്ങുകളിലും അതിന് യോജിച്ച വസ്ത്രം ധരിക്കാന് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാറുണ്ട്. മോഡേണ് ഡ്രസ്സുകള് ധരിക്കുന്ന കാര്യത്തിലും ബീന പിന്നിലല്ല. ഷോര്ട്ട് ടോപ്സ്, ടീ ഷര്ട്ട്, ജീന്സ് എന്നിവയൊക്കെ യാത്രാവേളകളില് ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ബ്രൈറ്റ് കളറുകളോടാണ് പ്രിയം. പാര്ട്ടിവെയറുകളില് താത്പര്യം ബ്ലാക്കാണ്.
യാത്ര
മാസത്തിലേതാണ്ട് 15 ദിവസവും ബീന യാത്രകളിലായിരിക്കും. സാരികളും മറ്റു വസ്ത്രങ്ങളും തേടിയുള്ള യാത്ര. ബിസിനസ് ആവശ്യങ്ങള്ക്കായുള്ള യാത്രകേളറെയും തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലാണ്. കാഞ്ചീപുരം. ഉത്തരേന്ത്യയിലും പോകാറുണ്ട്. ഡല്ഹിയിലും മുംബൈയിലുമൊക്കെ. യാത്രകള് പലപ്പോഴും ഒറ്റയ്ക്കായിരിക്കും.
വിദേശത്തേക്കും പോകാറുണ്ട്. ഈയിടെ റഷ്യയില് പോയി. അവിടെ മോസ്കോയും സെന്റ് പീറ്റേഴ്സ്ബര്ഗുമൊക്കെ കണ്ടു; മനോഹരമായ കൊട്ടാരങ്ങളും മ്യൂസിയവുമൊക്കെ നിറഞ്ഞ സ്ഥലം. അതിന് മുന്പ് ഇറ്റലിയിലും സ്വിറ്റ്സര്ലന്ഡിലെ സൂറിച്ചിലുമൊക്കെ പോയി.
സിനിമ, സംഗീതം
ആമിര് ഖാന്റെ '3 ഇഡിയറ്റ്സ്' ആദ്യ ആഴ്ച തന്നെ കണ്ടു. സൂപ്പര് ഫിലിം.
മലയാളം, ഹിന്ദി, തമിഴ് സിനിമകള് കാണാറുണ്ട്. ആമിറാണോ ഇഷ്ടതാരം?
ഇഷ്ടങ്ങള് മാറിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കും. മലയാളത്തിലെ സിനിമാതാരങ്ങള് പലരും ശീമാട്ടിയില് വന്ന് വസ്ത്രങ്ങള് എടുക്കാറുണ്ട്. ശീമാട്ടിയുടെ നൂറാം വാര്ഷികത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി കൊച്ചിയില് നടത്തിയ ആഘോഷപരിപാടികളില് ഹിന്ദി താരങ്ങളായ മന്ദിരാ ബേദിയും സമീറാ റെഡ്ഡിയുമെത്തിയിരുന്നു.
ഒറ്റയ്ക്കുള്ള യാത്രകളില് പലപ്പോഴും ബീനയ്ക്ക് കൂട്ട് സംഗീതമാണ്. കാറില് എപ്പോഴും പാട്ടുണ്ടാവും. തീരെ സ്ലോ സോങ്ങുകളോട് താത്പര്യം കുറവാണ്. സെമി - ക്ലാസ്സിക്കല് ടൈപ്പാണ് താത്പര്യം. എ.ആര്.റഹ്മാന്റെ പാട്ടുകള് ഇഷ്ടമാണ്.
ഫിറ്റ്നസ്
ഇടയ്ക്കൊന്ന് നിര്ത്തിയതാണെങ്കിലും ജിമ്മില് പോകാന് വീണ്ടും തുടങ്ങിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. രാവിലെ ആറിന് എഴുന്നേറ്റു കഴിഞ്ഞാല് 'തല്വാക്കറി'ലേക്ക്. അവിടെ വെയ്റ്റ്, എയ്റോബിക്സ്, ട്രെഡ്മില് എക്സര്സൈസ് എന്നിവയാണ് ചെയ്യാറ്. ഇപ്പോള് യോഗയും തുടങ്ങിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. നൃത്തം കുറച്ചുനാളായി ഇല്ല.
ഭക്ഷണം
ഞാന് പക്കാ വെജിറ്റേറിയനാണ്. സൗത്ത് ഇന്ത്യന് ഡിഷസിനോടാണ് പ്രിയം. കൊച്ചിയിലുള്ളപ്പോള് ഭക്ഷണം വീട്ടില് തന്നെയാക്കാന് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാറുണ്ട്.

എറണാകുളത്ത് പനമ്പിള്ളി നഗറിലാണ് ബീന താമസിക്കുന്നത്. ഇവിടെ മക്കളായ ഗൗതം, തുഷാര, വിഷ്ണു എന്നിവര്ക്ക് നല്ലയൊരമ്മയായി. മൂത്ത മകന് ഗൗതം അമ്മയെ ബിസിനസ്സില് സഹായിക്കുന്നു. മകള് തുഷാര ബി എസ് സി ബയോകെമിസ്ട്രി അവസാനവര്ഷം; എംബിഎയ്ക്കായി തയ്യാറെടുക്കുന്നു. ഇളയ മകന് വിഷ്ണു പത്താം ക്ലാസ്സില്. വീട്ടില് ഏറ്റവും ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട സ്ഥലമേതെന്ന് ചോദിച്ചാല് ബീന പറയും, 'ബാല്ക്കണി'.
ബിസിനസ്സിനെപ്പറ്റി ചോദിക്കില്ലെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞെങ്കിലും ഇടയ്ക്കെപ്പോഴോ ബിസിനസ് കയറിവന്നു. വസ്ത്ര വ്യാപാര രംഗത്ത് പുതിയ പുതിയ പ്ലെയേഴ്സ് വരികയാണല്ലോ? എന്നിട്ടും ശീമാട്ടിയിലെ തിരക്ക് കുറയുന്നില്ല?
ബീന എനര്ജറ്റിക്കാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ എതിരാളികള് ഉണ്ടാകുന്നത് അവര്ക്ക് ഇഷ്ടവുമാണ്.

THESE ARE indeed the days of the superwoman. Of the woman who walks confidently, briefcase in hand, baby by her side, manicured nails and toes, her personal passions all attended to and the home front sitting pretty. Yes, the alpha woman. And of the many alpha women who are doing all this and more is Beena Kannan, the charming entrepreneur behind Seematti, a well-known textile store in the city.
From being a hard core business woman, a mother of three, a mother-in-law, " no, not yet a grandma", a young widow, the strength behind her organisation, Ms. Kannan is now taking her hobby, dance, as seriously as her business and home.
LIFE
AND CAREER
Beena
Kannan is the MD of Seematti, a textile major in Kerala. She is an
outstanding woman, with immense Business capabilities. She is also a wife
and a mother of three and a community loving person.
Interestingly Beena discovered her passion for saree design after completing her graduation. She initially learnt the ropes of the trade from her father Thiruvenkidam who was in the saree business. Today, she thrives on being innovative, revives old age techniques and blends them with modern fabrics. She travels throughout India and visits remote villages to source the different varieties of sarees.
Beena’s
natural flair and practical experience have been her guiding light. Her
plan is to reach out to Keralites living abroad especially in the Middle
East, Europe and North America.
Beena designs bridal brocades with pearl-beaded gold and silver strands to embellish sarees. But sarees are not her only passion. There is another face to Beena. She is a talented classical bharathanatyam dancer. She learnt for a year under Vilasini teacher of Kalakshetra and later joined Dharani School. Syamala Surendran is her dedicated guru. Ms. Kannan is now taking her hobby, dance, as seriously as her business and home.

She has dexterously combined home, work and dance into a happy life.

Sunday, she has finally put her "plus ten or minus ten" years of
dance practice on to the stage. " I began dancing early, at the age
of seven, but had to discontinue it due to an ailment. Later when my
daughter, Thushara, started dancing, when in th
e
second class, I too went back to dance. But there was no regularity in my
dance. I learnt for a year under Vilasini teacher of Kalakshetra and later
joined Dharani School. Shyamala Surendran, thereafter has been my teacher
and the motivation behind the whole thing."
From taking hard nosed business decisions to running a household, Beena says, "dance has given me mental relief at all times." And for the young woman, married at the age of 21, stepping into the ruthless world of business and simultaneously nursing an ailing husband, dance provided the ultimate solace. "The twelve years that my husband was ill before he passed away was a continuous trauma. My daughter was just six -months- old when we discovered the sickness. It was unsettling and I could never pursue dance seriously. Later, whenever I was in town after a business tour, it was dance. Even last month I was in and out of Kochi but then I am ready for it now."
Irregularity in practice, she says, has been her biggest problem. "I could never make a steady progress because of my business-related travelling. Dance requires a lot of patience and time and it was always a passion for me. Perhaps that is why I always came back to it. I didn't want to dance in public, as it was just a hobby. But I thought, why not and why not now."
Nothing unusual
At 44, her arangetram is nothing unusual. " When I see some of the other students who learn dance for three months, have an arangetram and move on, why not me? I have been learning this, on and off, for so many years." Her teacher, Shyamala Surendran, says Ms. Kannan, began learning dance late in life and is an accomplished dancer. "Age has never been a factor," says Beena with a disarming smile. With a married son, a daughter in Class XII and a young son in Class V, with a 700-strong staff in the four branches of Seematti, to be directed, with a love for baking and " cooking chicken dishes," Ms. Kannan has combined the boardroom and the living room in a harmonious Bharatnatyam recital.
SEEMATTI AT A GLANCE: Seematti has been one of the most preferred shopping destinations for Keralites and tourists to the state of kerala. designer collections are also showcased. Beena Kannan is an able designer
and her creations are always on display. The latest collections in store
are NRI Jaal and www-seematti collection 2007. Seematti was voted as
Kerala’s no 1 textile retailer in the CNBC Awaaz survey recently.
World’s Longest Silk Saree
: Beena Kannan has designed world’s longest handwoven silk
saree that won a place in the Guinness Book of World Records and Limca
Book of Records. It is 486.6 metres long. The total Saree weight is 72.583
kg. The total weight of the silk used in the crafting was around 57kg,
while the cost of making the saree was around Rs 2.04 crore. Intricate
designs on this record-making saree reflect India’s rich cultural
legacy. The themes of the pallavs are varied and encompass history, epics,
folklore, myths, famous personalities, places and monuments of India.
My personal experience with seematti was good till now, but I am starting to hear complaints from people saying that there is not enogh selection these days... atleast in ladies section. Well that's up to you to decide.
